How much do you spend on Christmas? Have you ever thought about the starving people in the or world and how 30 billion  dollars would stop it, or how it would only cost 10 billion dollars to fix the world's drinking water problems? When America alone, spends 450 billion dollars on Christmas and produces 5 million tons of rubbish that gets emptied  into our world EVERY YEAR! Instead of spending money on stuff you DON'T need give the money to those who REALLY need it and instead make your family little things and spend time with them that they will enjoy more than the stuff they don’t need. The real reason for Christmas is to spend time with the people you love and celebrate the birth of Jesus. So instead of buying presents put together money and help the world. These are some of the reasons why to spend less on Christmas.

Apparitions Of Mary

In 1858 Mary appeared to a young girl called Bernadette while she was collecting firewood Mary appeared in cove and was dressed in dassling white clothes with yellow roses on her feet. She asked Benadette to ask the priest to build a temple.Mary appeared to her 17 more times and on the eighteenth time there was a large crowd gathered to see her. Mary told Bernadette that she is the Imacluete exemption  then she told her to dig a well and ate grass then wash her face in the water Bernadette did and water filled the well. All the sick and lame came to the well and drank and bathed in the water and became well again.

Keeping Ourself Safe

Zoe and Aroha are walking home from the dairy eating ice creams. Up ahead of them they noticed an unfamiliar car parked at the side of the road. As they approach, a woman winds down the window and calls the girls over. Reluctantly the approached the car. " Hi girls.how are you today today?," the lady called. "We're fine thanks," the girls replied.'They look like yummy ice creams. Your mum just called me to come and pick you because she isn't felling well." Zoe and Aroha looked at each other and decided their mum said just to walk home and she was not sick. " Ummmm that's ok our mum said to walk home," said Zoe. " Well just get in the car!" The lady jumped out and and opened the car, "Well go on then get in," said the random lady. "NO" they shouted! The lady pushed them in to the car and slammed the door behind them and jumped in and locked the car. The lady drove off with them locked in the car. They stopped up by a little bungalow. The lady pulled them out and shoved them into the house. They got pushed into a small room and were very squished. The lady locked the door.They whispered about   how to get out. They got a stone and smashed the window. They ran home and told their mum, who told the police.

Does Hawaii have a national dish? Lomi Lomi Salmon. It is made out of It is a fresh tomato and salmon salad, and was introduced to Hawaiians by early western sailors. It is typically prepared by mixing raw salted, diced salmon with tomatoes, sweet gentle Maui onions (or sometimes green onion), and occasionally flakes of hot red chili pepper, or crushed ice. It is always served cold.

Architecture Essay

Architects will still be required in the future because everyone needs a house to live in, as well as buildings, offices, schools, churches, and so on.   In New Zealand the population is growing.  In Auckland, there is a lack of housing.  In Christchurch there was a major earthquake, which crumbled lots of buildings and houses and they are redesigning the city. There are many buildings being built and houses as well, which all require architects.  If you want to build your dream house, you need an architect. 

 What you need to do to apply to become an architect, what are the different career options, what money do they earn, and what is involved in a typical week?

 

When you go to university, you have a number of options to study architecture. You could choose the following options:

 Level 6 (National Diploma in Architectural Technology.) You will need 6,280 credits to finish this qualification. You can study full time for two years, or part time.

 Level 7 (Bachelor of Architectural Studies.) You need 7,360 credits to finish this qualification.  You study for full time for 3 years, and start in February.

 Level 9 (Masters of Architecture.) You need to have completed your Level 7 to enter into this.  You will need 9,240 credits to finish this qualification.  You will study full time for 18 months (minimum), or part time for two and a half years  (minimum).

 The first round of interviews for all options, are held in November and May.

 

I have chosen to look at what you need for the Level 7, Bachelor of Architectural Studies.  This is where I would start and then go onto Masters.

To apply, I will need an application form, portfolio in hard copy, evidence of drawing techniques, photographs, completed visual arts courses, models, designed or built objects, and a written statement outlining my reasons to be an architect. I need to have a portfolio so that I can show that I can draw, design and communicate ideas.  I might need to have an interview.

 To study at Auckland University, it would be based on my achievement of the published NCEA Level 3 rank score.

 I will need 16 credits at Level 3 or higher in these subjects: classical studies, english, geography, history, history of arts, Te Reo Maori or Te Reo Rangatira.

I will also need 16 credits at Level 3 or higher in these subjects: accounting, biology, calculus, chemistry, economics, mathematics, physics and statistics.

To study at Unitec, I would need a minimum of 42 credits at NCEA Level 3 or higher National Qualifications Framework. 

I would need 14 credits at Level 3 or higher from the approved subject list and another 14 credits or higher taken from no more than two additional subjects.

I need 14 credits at Level 1 or higher in Mathematics, plus 8 credits at Level 2 or higher in English or Te Reo Maori.  A minimum of 4 credits must be in Reading and a minimum of 4 credits must be in writing.

 

Some of things you learn as an architecture student are how to design, sketch, draw, model, use computers to design, research, deal with clients, communication, planning, project managing and managing budgets.

 

You will learn in a digital design studio and fabrication workshop where you will make my models, you will use audio-visual equipment and a computer lab.  There is a special library, lots of historical books and archives.  You would get to work on real projects with registered architects and also go on exchange trips overseas.

 

Career options as an architect include; architect, architectural historian, building industry consultant, building technologist, computer-aided design professional, film designer, design-based librarian or archivist, or heritage architect, interior designer, project manager, urban design and environmental design.

 The money you could make when you first graduate from university is between $40,000 and $55,000 a year.

Over the next five years you could earn between $50,000 and $80,000, depending on where you work. Architects in the Auckland region tend to earn $5,000 to $20,000, more than other parts of New Zealand.

Registered architects can expect to earn $60,000 to $90,000.

Principal architects with more than five or more experience can earn between $60,000 to $110,000. Self-employed people may earn more.

A typical week will involve:

Designing, 3D design

Listening, communicating with clients, builders, construction people, other designers

Travel to meet clients and site visits

Budgets

To conclude, architecture is a career that will still be relevant in the future. It is an ideal career for people with artistic talent and good organisational and communication skills. Term 3 Reflection

We have learnt a lot of lesons this term. One of my highlights was going skiing because I was in the top group, and I learnt a lot and improved my confidence on steep slopes. My second highlight was moving up to Elite Special Forces in the learner license because I now can listen to muisic while I'm working. My challenge was having good relationships with my friends. I was having some problems with one particular person, so I am trying to build stronger relationships with other people. I have learnt about fractions, decimals and pesentages.

My Next Learning Steps

I have assessed my own work in reading, writing and maths (fractions), and set my next steps.

Reading: Reading a wide variety of texts in my own time

               Continue to practice reading for research skills

Writing:   Improve knowledge of word rules- spelling

               Use most grammatical conventions correctly (tense,verbs etc)

We have been learnig about how we come to know God through Jesus Christ. In the bible story Jesus feeds the 5000, we learn through Jesus that God cares about as and God will always be with us. We know this because Jesus gave every one enough food to eat and God's power can preform miracles.    

A Very Sad Moment

In the poor areas of the Philippines, there are cemeteries that are overcrowded. There are poor parts and rich parts. In the rich part you have to by the coffins and in the poor part you have to rent a coffin. If they do not repay the rent they get smashed in to and the body gets chucked out in to the trash. The book we are reading it called Trash. It is about three boys. They found a wallet and they are trying to find the grave of the little girl who is suppose to be dead, but the little girl was not dead she was sitting on top of other graves. On the Day of the Dead, heaps of people go to the graves and have a party with their loved ones that have passed away. This is very sad because people do not care about the poor people and just think of themselves.

Paul - Apostle to the Gentiles - Who are you?

Paul's real name was Saul. He was a Jew. Before he changed his name he was bad. He killed people who believed in Jesus. Saul was riding on a horse, then suddenly a lightning strike hit Saul in both eyes. Jesus asked him why he was killing people because to Jesus if you kill other people you are killing him. The followers took him in the town. Ananias came in and then Saul could see again. Ananias came because Jesus said to go and do it. Paul was bad but became good, he was one of Jesus's best followers

Coming to Know God and The Moon

In the old days people did not know very much about God. That was the same about the moon, people thorght that it was a big hunk of chese! Before I learnt about the moon I thought it was a white blob. Neal Armstrong was the first person to land on the moon, so people got to know the moon a bit better. It is like when Jesus came to earth, people got to know what God was like, but it is still a big mystery  about God. The moon on the other hand is getting to be less of a mystery, because people can fly to the moon and see for themselves what it is like. 

The Egg Challenge

For the last couple of weeks we have been doing the egg challenge. My class did it last year and really enjoyed it, so Fergus thought we should do it this year.

The egg challenge is a babysitting challenge.  You have to look after it like it is a baby, for eggsample, take it every where with you and try not to break it!  I built a little house with a bed and all the things in a room. I called him Eggcellent E, born in Rotorua and he was two yearsold.

Eggcalent E did not crack, but I did not take him everywhere as I was eggactly supposed to.  He lived his in his house at school, where he was safe.    At home he was in danger of the kitten, the whisk or the food mixer, or cracking his head on the mixing bowl.  He did come to swimming one day, which was not very eggciting.  At the end of the challenge I fed him to my dog Jess, because I think his brain was scrambled!

African Art

African art is different than other art. It is bright and colourful. There is no wrong or right, and there are no dull colours. The picture I did is of a woman carrying a basket.This is a picture of my African art, my whole class did one.

This is where we got the idea from.

Between Having Heaps and Not Having Very Much

This picure represents that money cannot buy joy and happiness. People who have not very much money can be happy, more happy than people who do have money. This picture shows a boy that has not very much money, but he is very happy with what he has, even though you might think that it is a bit of garbage, to him it means 1 million dollars! The boy who has heaps of money and all the things he wants is not very grateful, because he wants more and more. I think in New Zealand we should give some money to the poor so they have enough money to buy clothes, food and water. All of us who have a lot of money, we should not always have the newest thing, but we could donate it to the poor.

For The Love of Horses, by Kelly Wilson

For The Love of Horses, by Kelly Wilson, is a non-fiction book about the Wilson sisters' inspiring journey to save New Zealand's wild horses.

The story starts with Vicki, Kelly and Amanda, when they were young and growing up in Northland. They did not have very much money and they worked very hard to have horses.They were riding, training and selling horses. Their first show was an A and P show. They would have to win to cover all the costs of the horses and they ended up going to many shows. The story also covers their school life, which in primary school they loved it, and then in middle school they struggled to fit in. 

The middle of the book tells us about the musters of the wild horses, the Kaimanawa's in Central Plateau, on the army's training ground. They save horses from slaughter and take them home to train, ride and compete. When they finished school they chose their own careers. Vicki chose horses, Kelly chose university and did photography and graphic design, and Amanda did filming and horses too. The rest of the book was about the positives and the challenges of training the Kaimanawa's, the camps, their careers and their relationships.

I liked how the book showed how they trained the horses, and their journey from when they were young to now, because I learnt that even if you do not have much money you can still become one of the best. This book was inspiring because they went through hard times, and they still powered through with what they were doing, and saving some Kaimanawa's, instead of the Kaimanawa's going to slaughter. I really liked all the photos because they showed how much they worked. It was inspiring that Kelly Wilson wrote the book and not someone else.

 

The bits I didn't enjoy was the Kaimanawa's going to slaughter, being sold and being put down. I also did not like when the book ended!

Kelly is trying to say, one: hard work pays off. Two: if first you don't succeed, try and try again. Three: being different is good. Four: wild horses are worth saving. I think the messages are very helpful and I would use them.

This book is an inspiring and interesting book, and I recommend it to animal lovers and people who like nature. It makes me want to go on one of their camps and read their next book! 

Why We Should Have A Dog At School

We should have a dog at school because when people are sad they can cuddle up with the dog and express their feelings and the dog would understand. If people have a hard time reading they can read to the dog and the dog won't say critical words. Dogs have sensitive hearing so the class would be quieter. Having a fluffy friend makes you more relaxed and can concentrate better. We might have a school dog so we had to make some rules up for have a dog:

Sacrifice

To sacrifice something means to give up something for something else. For example Jesus gave His life for us.
When Adam and Eve ate from the Tree of Knowledge, they felt embarrassed that they were naked. God felt sorry for them so He sacrificed an animal, so that they could have some clothes to wear. We know that Jesus is the ultimate sacrifice because He sacrificed His life for us.

Cross Country

Today we had cross country. We did it at the Race Course. We had to run 1.66km. I ran the whole way. We had to go up and down hills, past jumps, over gates and through the finish line. I came 7th. Zeth fell in a hole going up the hill, so she did not go as fast as she could of. So Zeth and I were battling to the finsh but I just sneaked ahead. At the end I has exhausted. I was very pleased with myself, that I ran all the way and did my best!

   

My Character Profile - Vicki Wilson

Viki is very talented. She has two sisters Amanda and Kelly.

When she was young she did not have very much money. She had to work very hard for everything. She would often have little money and in the beginning she had to buy untrained and sometimes hurt horses, because they were cheaper.


Vicki would train and race, she would get a placing in most events. She would be calm and patient with the horses and even if she fell off them, she would still get back on and ride them.  One time, she dislocated her should and she hung from the rafters to put it back.  She is calm and tough.


The most recent thing Vicki and her sisters have done was save New Zealand's wild horses, the Kaimanawa horses, on the Kaimanawa hill range on the Central Plateau. They filmed what they did.  Amanda was in charge of filming, Kelly job was taking photos and writing the book.


The sisters had to all train and compete in the first ever Kaimaniwa event. They had 80 days to turn wild horses into being able to be ridden and compete. Vicki came second and last in this event, the other two sisters placed as well.


I like Vicki, because she is the oldest, the boss of things and she is strong.  She is really good at training horses and even if a horse bucks her off, she gets back on and keeps going.


I have the book For the Love of Horses. I really recomend this book because it goes back to when they were young and less fortunate than us and now they have become professional horse riders. It is $45 from Paper Plus. 

Vikings

1. The Vikings were famous for sailing huge distances from their home in Scandinavia between AD 800 and 1066 to raid and plunder, but they also traded with people from other countries.

2. The name ‘Viking means ‘a pirate raid’ in the Old Norse language.

3. Around 500 years before Christopher Columbus ‘discovered’ the American continent, Vikings had visited its shores, landing in what is now Canada in around AD 1000.

4. Among the many gods Vikings believed in were Thor, the god of thunder, and Loki, a cheeky mischief-maker who could shape-shift to become all different kinds of animals. What a beast!

5. The Vikings were expert boat builders and sailors. Keels – central spines along boats’ bottoms – made their 16 to 37m ‘longboats’ easy to steer, and because these were designed to float high in the water, landing on beaches was easy.

6. The Vikings were eco-pioneers – sort of! The ‘long houses’ where families lived would have turf roofs to help keep in the heat.

7. Fenrir Grayback, the werewolf in the Harry Potter books, was named after a ferocious giant wolf from ancient Viking mythology.

8. When important Vikings died, they would be placed with all their clothes, jewellery, even their animals, in a burial ship. This would either be covered with a huge mound of earth or set alight and pushed out to sea.

9. Bitter Scandinavian winters and frozen fjords didn’t stop the Vikings from tucking into their favourite food – fish! During warmer months they would hang up and dry fish to eat later.

10. Ever wondered where the word ‘berserk’ comes from? ‘Berserkers’ was the name of some terrifying Viking warriors who wore bear or wolf skins and howled in battle like wild animals! 

 

God's Creation

What is a sacrament? A sacrament is a sign that people can see, which tells them something about the power and love of God- Te Atua who cannot be seen.

Nature reminds me of God because God made it. Every bit is very special. If people look carefully with eyes of faith, they can see signs of God in everything around them.

Animals are God's Creation because He made them. They are all different and meant to be made to be different. Some are meant to be made to fight and some are meant to cuddle up. I see God when I look at animals.

Sacrament

1. What does the word sacrament mean? Sacrament is a Christian Rite recognized as of particular importance and significance. There are various views on the existence and meaning of such rites.

2. What are the sacraments of the Catholic Church (in order of how they happen)? Baptism, reconciliation, confirmation, eucharist, marriage, holy orders and anointing of the sick.

3. What does initiation mean? The action of accepting someone or the beginning of something.

4. What are the sacraments of initiation into the Catholic Church? Explain what each one means and involves. Reconciliation means having your sins cleansed, or forgiven.

Confirmation is also one of the seven sacraments. it is when a person is sealed with the Holy Spirit.

Eucharist means when a person is ready to receive the body and blood of Jesus Christ.

The sacrament of marriage is when a Man  and a Woman promise to take each other as their husband or wife.

The Holy orders is when a particular person is accepted into the church as a priest.

Anointing of the sick is a ritual of healing the spirit and mental sickness.

Skiing, My Birthday, Ears Pierced and Baptism

On Monday I went skiing with 50 other people. We went to Ohau. I was in the top group. I went up the chair lift, the pomer and the magic carpet. I like being in the snow and with my friends. At lunch time it got really windy and started to snow.

On Tuseday this week it was my birthday. I turned eleven and I got heaps of presents like: For The Love Of Horse, a runing tee-shirt, Sharpies, water colour pencils and a trip to Melbourne to see Taylor Swift. (She had to put on another show because it was so popular.)

On Wednesday I got my ears periced. I got them because I learnt all my times tables. They did not hurt. I got these silver balls. I have to put this oil around my ear pierce, so it doesn't get infected.

On Thursday I got baptised in front of the whole school. My Mum and Dad were there and my God parents are Miss Huls and Anna Martin. I felt special, because I did it with the school. I got a present from Miss Huls and it was a necklace with a cross on it. I got a candle, another cross neackless and a certificate. I left the oils on my head for the whole day because they smell so good.  

 

Poetry Activity Week 11

Highlights Of Term 2

This term has been an exciting and busy. We got a new class rat called Speggetti becase the other one passed away. Nisha brought her new bunny rabit called Leo to visit us. For Mothers Day we had a Wounderful Womens Day. I brought my auntie Jilly Ju Ju. In maths we did area and perimeter. I learnt how to find a area and perimeter of a circle. On Friday we had a support the Highlanders mufti day. We sent a video to them. Next term I am looking forward to learning new things.

                                                                                                                       

Rat's Toy I Made

In the weekend I made rat toys. Miss Huls had a challege to make a rat toy for our new class rat Spaghetti. My Nana was down and she taught me how to knit, so I made these blankets for both of the rats. The other one I made is a swing. I made it out of a toilet roll, some string and beads. When we put it up should go on the top of the cage so he can go through it and go over it.

My Dream Bedroom

For perimeter and area we had to design our own dream bedroom. I have got a bed, pillows, bedside cabinets, swing chair, desk, chair, bean bag, window seat, piano, rug, coffee table and a tv cabinet.

 

 

This was my inspiration. The whole area of my bedroom is 150m and the whole perimeter is 50m.
